49th Teachers launches with hundreds of classroom resources to help discover Canadian kids' books

Imagine thousands of Canadian kids’ books, located in one place. They’re here, complete with a database you can search by genre, age range, grade level, and theme. Add to that hundreds of classroom resources for teachers, librarians, and educators to explore by type, subject, and grade level and you've got the perfect match.

Since 49th Shelf launched 49th Kids earlier this year, a site dedicated to children's and young adult's literature, Mugo and the 49th Shelf team's Adrienne Guthrie have been rather busy.

Adrienne has gathered and compiled an impressive set of hundreds of classroom resources for the site's latest addition: 49th Teachers

Mugo worked on an import feature for the data, as well as its presentation and discoverability via the site's search.

For teachers, librarians, and educators

Approximately 300 resources are currently on the site, with more to come in the following weeks.

Each resource features detailed information including

  • resource type
  • suggested grades
  • reading level schemes
  • subjects
  • curriculum links

The types of resources range from teacher's guides, to reading supports, student activities, and handouts.

Resources cover a wide range of subjects from business studies, to history, and visual arts.

All resources are available to download for free in easy-to-use PDF format.

Explore, filter, find, and sort

The built-in search offers various filter and sort options to help users find exactly what they're after.

As the collection of resources grows, being able to explore what's on offer easily and quickly will become increasingly important.

The site search, which also powers 49th Kids, makes this possible. Using search phrases and keywords in combination with the filter options on offer allows users to match their queries with what's available.

Notes from a Children’s Librarian

Julie Booker is 49th Shelf's resident children's librarian, and her featured selections of books for kids of all ages are also highlighted on the 49th Teachers homepage.
